Of the hundreds of cases handled practically no hemorrhage occurring until about 6 years ago, at which time an alarming number of hemorrhages were evidenced in disturbing frequency. I am convinced that this increased bleeding results from the chewing of aspirin gum to relieve pain. I have found in the literature some evidence that aspirin prolonged prothrombin time and reports of more frequent hemorrhaging among patients who chewed aspirin gum after a tonsillectomy or a tooth extraction.
